Questions God Asks Man – Week 2
If God Be for Us, Who Can Be Against Us?
Romans 8:31
Last week, we began a new series called “Questions God Asks Man.” We started with the very first question God asked Adam in the Garden: “Where art thou?”
Today, we continue with another question—this one asked through the Apostle Paul in Romans 8:31:
“If God be for us, who can be against us?”
This question is both powerful and personal. It has two parts—God Himself on one side, and everyone else on the other. And the truth is this: With God on our side, we cannot lose.
Martin Luther, the great Reformer, once said:
“One plus God is a majority.”
That’s the heart of today’s message.
Paul begins: “If God be for us…”
We are not talking about a king, a president, a doctor, a lawyer, a demon, a devil, or a superhero. We are talking about the Almighty God of Heaven—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
In Job 38, God reminded Job just how big He is: “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world? … Hitherto shalt thou come, but no further: and here shall thy proud waves be stayed.” (Job 38:11)
Proverbs 8:29 echoes the same: “When He gave to the sea His decree, that the waters should not pass His commandment…”
The same God who tells the oceans where to stop is the same God who is for you.
If that God is for us, who can be against us?
Now, maybe you’re thinking: “It sure doesn’t feel like God is for me. My life is full of trouble—health trouble, family trouble, financial trouble.”
Paul acknowledged this in Romans 8:35–36: tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword. These are real enemies.
But then Paul looked higher. Verse 28 says: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God.”
And in verses 38–39 he triumphantly declared: “For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come… nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Yes, life can feel like everything is against us. But those things are temporary. God is still working His eternal plan.
That’s why we can say with confidence: If God be for us, who can be against us?
Romans 8:29–33 tells us our position in Christ:
He foreknew us and predestined us.
He called us and justified us.
He spared not His Son but delivered Him up for us all.
That’s a huge investment!
Why would we doubt His love, His care, or our security in Him? We are His children. Our destiny is secure. Our blessings are secure.
Psalm 118:6 reminds us: “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?”
Abraham Lincoln once said:
“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right.”
That’s the key. Are you on God’s side? Because if you are, you can confidently say: If God be for me, who can be against me?
So let me ask:
Are you on God’s side?
Is your position secure in Him?
What do you need Him to do with His power today?
When is the last time you asked the God who is for you to work on your behalf?
Because here’s the truth: If God be for us, who can be against us?
